Symposium Series - Thursday, February 07, 2008
Wednesday February 27th, as party of the SBCS Symposium Series, Professor Scott Stoller will be presenting a talk on Finding Synchronization Errors in Multi-Threaded Programs

An Abstract of the talk:

More and more multi-threaded software is being written, to take advantage
of multi-CPU systems and multi-core processors.  But multi-threaded
programs are notoriously difficult to develop and debug, because
synchronization errors can be subtle and hard to reproduce.

This talk will describe techniques for finding three common kinds of
synchronization errors: data races, deadlocks, and atomicity violations.
A data race occurs when two threads access the same shared data structure
without using consistent synchronization to coordinate their accesses.  A
deadlock occurs when multiple threads are blocked, each waiting for some
action by one of the other blocked threads.  An atomicity violation, which
is similar to a serializability violation in transaction processing,
occurs when concurrent method calls are interleaved in such a way that
they interfere with each other.

We will describe algorithms for finding these errors, our implementation
of these algorithms for Java programs, and our experience applying them to
some publicly available Java software.

This is joint work with Rahul Agarwal, Amit Sasturkar, and Liqiang Wang.

Updated: The talk will be in room CS 2311.

Computational Geometry Methods to Improve Efficiency and Safety in Air Traffic Management

Joseph S. B. Mitchell
Stony Brook University

A severe storm is moving through the central plains. How should air traffic be routed around the hazardous weather cells in order to minimize impact on the air transportation system?

Challenging geometric optimization problems arise in trying to maximize the effective safe utilization of the National Airspace System in the presence of many and varied constraints, such as hazardous weather. The challenge is substantially compounded when the constraints vary in time and are not known with certainty, as is the case with the weather.

In this talk we discuss algorithmic methods from the field of computational geometry that can be used in modeling and solving air traffic management problems, such as capacity estimation, flow routing, and airspace configuration in the face of dynamic and uncertain constraints and demands.

No prior background will be assumed in air traffic management or computational geometry.

There will be FREE FOOD after the Symposium Series

Upcoming Talk - Limitations and Challenges in No Regret Algorithms
Limitations and Challenges in No Regret Algorithms
            Eyal-Even-Dar,UPenn
            Mon March 12 2007
            CS2311 2pm

No regret algorithms have been studied extensively since the pioneering works of Blackwell, Hannan and Robbins in 1950s. In a sequential decision making problem where you are given an advice by N experts at each time step, the no regret algorithms guarantee that you will always do almost as good as the best expert in hindsight. Equipped with such strong theoretical guarantee, no regret algorithms have been applied successfully in many fields including machine learning, economics and game theory.

In this talk I will present several challenges to and limitations of no regret algorithms. More specifically, I will consider adding natural constraints and adapting no regret algorithms to dynamic environments. Such scenarios will shed a light on how far these algorithms can be "pushed", while still satisfying the no regret property. Finally, I will consider a routing game where all users use no regret algorithms, and study the efficiency and the stability of such game.

Kama Sutra hits today! - Friday, February 03, 2006

Everyone knows you shouldn't open attachments... or even read an email if you don't know exactly who sent it to you.  The "Kama Sutra" worm promises to throw the entire IT world into a fully warranted panic over email security.  At risk:  any .doc, .xls, .pdf, database or compressed-format file on your Windows-based computer.  The virus will also attempt to disable your antivirus software if it is not up-to-date.  As usual, Mac and Linux users have nothing to worry about.

Keep in mind, the majority of internet security experts seem to agree on 3 surefire methods of prevention:

1. Don't open attachments with .exe, .com, .scr, .pif or double extensions (duh...)

2. Keep your software firewall activated and updated if necessary (XP users have a built-in firewall; you didn't deactivate it to make file sharing easier, did you?)

3. Most importantly, keep your antivirus program and definitions up to date.

If you are using the Symantec Client Security program provided through SoftWeb and cannot update using LiveUpdate, download the updated engine and definition files directly from Symantec.

If you are unfortunate enough to become infected with the Kama Sutra worm, CNET has provided a number of useful tips and links to internet security providers' removal tools.
